The creation of the Landwasser World

Railway culture meets cultural landscape

The Landwasser World lies at the heart of the Swiss canton of Graubünden, between the villages of Alvaneu, Schmitten, Filisur, Bergün and Davos Wiesen, characterised by water and the UNESCO World Heritage site. An adventure, natural and business world around the Landwasser Viaduct, the landmark of Graubünden.

The Landwasser World encompasses a multitude of experiences – and relies on existing elements that are optimised and new elements that are gradually integrated. In the five Adventure Worlds – Railway, Culture, Agriculture, Forest and Water – visitors can experience the diversity of the Alpine region and the more than 120 years of railway history.

In doing so, it harmoniously connects the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the RhB with the surrounding cultural landscape of Parc Ela. The Albula and Bernina Lines, added to the World Heritage List in 2008, are considered an outstanding example of Alpine engineering. On its 122-kilometre route over viaducts and through tunnels, it impressively traverses Switzerland's largest nature park, which is characterised by unspoilt mountain nature, historic villages and a vibrant multilingualism.

The Landwasser World is operated sustainably, i.e. on the basis of a balance of interests between economic performance, social consensus and environmental and cultural (railway heritage/RhB World Heritage) responsibility. The new adventure space is supported by an association of investors, destinations, municipalities and partner companies from the region, combining railway culture and cultural landscape in a unique way.
